Galpin's key point is prioritization. You do not need to be optimal in all nine areas for good health. You need to eliminate what he calls severe performance anchors: any component so weak that it caps everything else. Move that weak area up to sufficient, then pursue whatever you enjoy.

Score each movement on a 0-1-3 scale. Zero means acute injury risk; do not perform the exercise, because you could get hurt on rep one. One means a minor flaw; train it but watch load and volume. Maybe 3 means the movement is perfect or close to it; proceed with a reasonable protocol. The screen takes seconds per movement and costs nothing.

What Is the Simplest Test for Power?

The simplest power test is a standing broad jump, because power is speed multiplied by force and the jump expresses both in one effort. Stand still, swing or bounce as much as you like, and jump forward as far as possible without a running start.

A more functional alternative is a front squat or goblet squat hold. Hold about half your body weight at the bottom position for 45 seconds without technical breakdown. As an entry level, hold a third of your body weight for 30 seconds. Returning to standing is optional; the hold itself tests position, core and low-back control. How Do You Know If You Have Enough Muscle?

You know you have enough muscle when your fat-free mass index (FFMI) clears the health floor, which is a number above 20 for men and 18 for women. FFMI is calculated from total body weight, body fat percentage and height, and any standard online calculator produces the same figure and grading rubric. A DEXA scan is the gold-standard body composition measurement, though bioelectrical impedance works as an approximation.
